Shore to Shore Community Federal Credit Union’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
As the #BlackLivesMatter protests and marches continue in our country and within our communities, we feel a responsibility to take a stance against systemic racism and demonstrate our support for change. We do that not only by our actions, but by publicly sharing our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Shore to Shore is committed to building an organization that seeks and embraces diversity, actively pursues equity, and fosters an environment of inclusion. Our commitment stems from an understanding of historic injustice and an unwavering belief that differences in perspectives, experiences, and identities can help shape our future.
Change starts with each of us!
Since its onset, the credit union movement’s mission has been about “people helping people,” and we proudly reaffirm that we stand united in that commitment. Our Credit Union, our members, and our community includes people of all races, religions, cultures, physical abilities, neurological abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identity or expressions. If we are not willing to speak openly and respectfully, we lose what makes our organization, our members, and our community unique. We all lose when we do not listen and when we do not ask questions. If we don’t actively provide a forum for people to be heard, we lose. We lose compassion. We lose understanding. We lose progress.
No human should suffer the indignity of being judged by the color of their skin. For this reason, we are making a commitment to face our blindness and bias by talking to one another about how we can be better. Better co-workers, better leaders, better member advocates and better community champions. For too long, a blind eye was turned on discrimination and systemic racism. Now, we are saying, it’s time to have uncomfortable discussions on how to improve and effect meaningful change. We will not tolerate any form of discrimination or unfair treatment at home or at work.
We will take this commitment to our community. We will support and participate in organized social movements that expand awareness of injustice and that bring change to eliminate systemic racism and discrimination. We know this is going to be hard, we know this is going to be uncomfortable; but we will still commit in order to effect meaningful change. Through this process, we hope to become more respectful, loving, and kind. The time is now. As the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The time is always right to do what is right."
We proudly stand with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the right of all people to raise awareness of injustice or discrimination and to affect change.
