Member Alert: Health Insurance Marketplace Scam
At Shore to Shore, we work hard to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in the marketplace. This knowledge not only helps you, our members, meet your financial goals but, also helps protect your financial well-being. Scammers and fraudsters spend their time thinking and dreaming up the next way they can fool individuals and steal their information, and we work hard to make sure you have as much information as possible to protect your identity.
The newest scam out there is targeting Health Insurance Marketplace customers. The scam involves contacting the “target” and informing them that they need to purchase insurance on the spot or pay a fine. The target is asked to “press 1” to continue and then an operator will collect the victim’s personal financial information along with their social security number. If you receive this type of phone call DO NOT give them any information. Hang up!
Do not trust any company that calls you asking for your personal information. If you receive a call from the Health Insurance Marketplace or any other company and are suspicious; research the contact information for yourself and call that company back directly. Most importantly, NEVER provide your personal information over the phone.
Things to remember to protect yourself from scammers:
- If you get a recorded call, hang up. Unless you signed up to receive recorded calls, the call is illegal.
- Don’t press 1 to speak to the operator this puts you at risk for receiving more calls.
- If you do speak to an operator who asks you for personal information, hang up!
If you get a call like this, report it to the FTC and contact Shore to Shore if you have concerns that you have fallen victim to one of these scams to find out what steps you need to take to protect your account.
